1 〔場所〕 a place; (狭い) a spot; (現場) a scene; a site; (所在地) a seat; 〔地方〕 a locality; a region; a district; a part; 〔余地〕 room; space; 〔ある距離の地点〕 《at some》 distance; 〔そば〕 one's side.

●殺人のあった所 the scene of a murder

・県庁のある所 the seat of the prefectural office

・昔城のあった所 the site of an old castle

・200 メートルほど行った所 a place some 200 meters away.

●彼のいる所がわからない. I don't know where he is.

・すわる所がない. There is no room to sit.

●2 メートル離れた所から人を撃つ shoot at sb from two meters' distance.

●人のいる所で in the presence of others

・校門の所で待つ wait at the school gate

●強い[弱い]ところ a strong [weak] point; one's strength [weakness].

●子供たちそれぞれにいいところがある Each of the children has something special about them.

・ささいなことを気にするところが父親そっくりだ. Her concern for details is just like her father.

・彼女には女らしいところがない. There is nothing womanly about her.

・彼は学者らしいところがある. He has something of the scholar about him.

・あの人にはちょっとそういったところがある. There is something of that in him.

・彼の態度にはうぬぼれた[生意気な]ところがある. His manner smacks [savors] of self-conceit [insolence]. | He has a savor of self-conceit [insolence] in his manner.

・彼女の態度には幾分冷淡なところがあった. There was a certain [a streak of] coldness in her manner.

・彼には多少頑固なところがある. He has a streak [strain, vein] of obstinacy in him.

・彼女には保守的なところがある. There is a conservative streak in her.

・彼女の性格にはちょっと意地悪なところがあった. There is a vindictive aspect to her nature.

・彼のそういうところが嫌いだ. That's what I don't like about him.

・あいつにはちょっと変なところがあるからな. He's a little bit different, you see.

・彼の曲には明るい中にもどこか哀愁を感じさせるところがある. Even in the liveliest passages of his music you feel a certain melancholy.

・定価 1 万円のところを 8 千円にまけてもらった. The list price was \10,000 but I brought them down to \8,000.

・それは彼女の知るところではない. That's not something that she knows about.

6 〔限り・範囲〕 extent.

●私の知ってるところでは so far as I know; to the best of my knowledge; from what I know

・見たところでは as far as appearance goes

・今までのところでは so [thus] far; up to the present [moment]

・私の覚えているところでは as far as my memory serves me

・私の知ってるところでは彼に客はなかった. He had no visitor that I know of.

7 〔時・時点〕 time; moment; 〔場面〕 situation.

●ここのところ of late; lately

・今のところは at present

・目下のところ at present; at the moment; for the present

・…するところだ be going to do; be (just) about to do; be on the point of doing

・早いところやってしまおう. Let's get it over with.

●危いところで at the last moment; at a critical moment

・すんでのところで ⇒すんでのところで

・皆そろったところで乾杯といこう. Now that everyone's here, let's have the toast.

●ちょうどその話をしていたところに彼がやってきた. Just as we were talking about it he came up.

・せっかく話がまとまりかけたところに新たな難問が持ち上がってきた. Just as things were coming to a settlement a new problem cropped up.

●…するところへ just as…; as…; when…; while…

・悪いところへ来る come at an unfavorable moment [time]; come at an ill-chosen time

・いいところへ来てくれた. You have come at the right moment [at a good time].

・そんなところへ持ってきて on top of that; in addition to that; to make matters worse

・職を失ったところへ持ってきて家族が病気になった. I was laid off from work and on top of that there was a sickness in my family.

●盗むところを見る see sb steal sth

・盗むところを捕える catch sb (in the act of) stealing sth

・もう少しで焼け死ぬところを助けられる be saved when one is about to be burned to death

・お忙しいところを申し訳ありませんが…. Excuse me for interrupting when you're so busy, but….

8 〔場所柄〕 a case; an occasion.

●ところもあろうに of all occasions [times].

ところをわきまえる be aware of the circumstances

・ところをわきまえない be unaware of the circumstances; misunderstand the situation.

9 〔ある条件のもとでの結果を表す〕

●もう少しで溺れるところだった. I came near being drowned. | I was nearly drowned.

・もう少しでひき殺されるところだった. I was nearly run over and killed.

・危ないところだったね. It was a near thing.

・封建時代ならお手打ちというところだった. In feudal times he would have been beheaded.

・発見が遅れていたら大惨事になるところだった. If discovery had been delayed it could have resulted in a disaster.

・いいえ, 本来ならこちらからお詫びをしなければならないところです. No, it is I who should apologize to you.

・〔先生が学生に〕 A をあげてもいいところだけど, 君は欠席が多いからね. You deserve an A, but you missed so many classes.

10 〔…したら〕 when one does.

●やってみたところ, 案外簡単だった. When I tried doing it, I found it unexpectedly easy.

・係に問い合わせたところそういう事実はないとのことだった. When I asked the person in charge I learned that it wasn't true at all.

・喜ぶだろうと思って持っていったところ見向きもされずがっかりした. I took it along thinking they'd be pleased to see it, so I was terribly disappointed when, on the contrary, they hardly gave it a glance.

所構わず indiscriminately; no matter where 《he is》.

●空き缶がところかまわず投げ捨てられている. One finds empty cans thrown away here, there, and everywhere.

・ところかまわず目障りな看板を立てるのはやめてほしい. I wish they'd stop putting up ugly signs anywhere and everywhere.

所嫌わず everywhere; anywhere; all over; irrespective of [regardless of] place; indiscriminately.

●出物, 腫物, ところ嫌わず. Farts and boils don't care where they come out.

所狭し

●ところ狭しと並べる arrange [display] sth in a cramped [an awkwardly confined] manner

・壁にはところ狭しといろいろな人の肖像画が掛けてあった. The wall was crowded with portraits of various people.

・部屋中にところ狭しとさまざまな家具が置かれていた. The room was overflowing with all kinds of furniture.

所を得る 〔ふさわしい地位につく〕 be in [out of] one's place [element]; be in [out of] place; 〔よい機会を得る〕 find the right moment.

●彼はところを得ていない. He hasn't found the right place (for his talents).
